Roughly fifty automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers state they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then located many other smeared cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state early analysis suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident rendered him stunned and required to be solved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
